My best guess for how it works is that there's "tiers" of bug brain- the lowest tiers live off of animalistic instinct and need something like PK aura to think, middle tiers can think but have little memory (or have a hive mind?), highest tiers have minds without any wyrm magic.

So bugs like Quirrel are middle tier, can think outside of Hallownest but lose some memory, Hornet would be high tier, random bugs like husks are low tier.

this could be completely wrong but it's my best way to think of things. This isn't even going into Mask Maker's bulls***.
