there's a sub plot line where you redirect the lava from the deep docks down the top of the ant hill and it fills and solidifies throughout the colony, fossilizing all the bugs within it. Then when you finish the <bug that hornet rides for fast travel>'s questline, it grows enough to release its spawn, who all aid it in excavating the new, stonied, obsidian ant colony. All the minor enemies are now dry-bone esque and reassemble some time after you defeat them. In carmelita's boss room, however, you discover an ancient looking and grand door over the floor, and can see an open area just peaking out below. It's unclear if she escaped with some members of her family/colony out from the bottom of the hill or where they are now. I didn't get that far in the game
