I really don’t understand this reasoning at all. There are many other ways to involve the community in the development of a game that don’t involve doing a Kickstarter.

I think it's because it's something that generally goes against the spirit of Kickstarter, which has always been about people getting the money they need to make a product, rather than a company who already has enough money getting more "just because". I would bet if a company like Activision did the exact same thing, it would significantly more backlash.
