I figured it out. The game loves its contact damage (and especially double contact damage) because it’s trying to get you to do hit and run tactics, (||just like the Pharlid Divers Hornet descends from on her mother’s side||).

Obviously this makes more sense for something like the hunter’s crest (which to be fair is the default crest), but personally that makes the most sense to me for not only contact damage but pretty heavy contact damage, especially for a game when essentially everything has attack animations.
