I think the ideas and commentary behind it was good, but the execution wasn't great, it started the whole "npcs kill themselves locking you out of the sidequest after you kill a random boss" trend that continued to elden ring, gael was barely present in the game because fromsoft was allergic to narrative up until sekiro, and many things are just left unexplained (what is emma's connection to dancer? untended graves?)
