Wanderer is, in terms of combat, a crutch and a detriment. It has its uses in platforming, however in combat it often serves as a disadvantage, builds bad habits, and is frankly unneeded.
"But it’s free damage!"
No, it isn’t. Hunter does 78 dps on max focus, Beast does 82, while Wanderer does a measly 70. You can also only equip one tool at a time, so whenever you opt to use something like Flintslate for passive bonus damage you also lose the opportunity to use more active tools like Curvesickle or Voltvessels, and vice versa. Furthermore, despite having roughly the same length as Hunter's attack, the Wanderer attack hitbox has the worst area coverage in the game. This means that Wanderer, unless used perfectly, misses a significant amount of swings any time a boss repositions vertically. Another option would be using Longclaw to boost its range and hitbox, meaning you have to burn a blue slot that could be used on something else just to get a usable hitbox. To put into perspective how much a blue slot means, with 3 blue slots you could equip Volt Filament, Injector Band and Sawtooth Circlet, 3 of the best tools in the game to completely trivialise everything. Except you can't do that because one slot has been burned on Longclaw. So no, Wanerer isn’t “free damage”, in fact, the less often you use it, the more damage you will do

It’s still best to rip the band-aid off and try to fight advertisement of the crest just because people develop bad habits.
