Who I think the knight is (and why it’s not dess)
On my first blind playthrough, after seeing carol I automatically assumed that she’s the knight. But after thinking about it, carol isn’t the knight. I won’t talk about why she isn’t because countless other people have, but yeah, it’s not carol. Carol is however working with the knight.
The majority of people think it may be dess, and yes, there is a lot of evidence to back this up. But also, I want to bring up something that I’ve seen lots of people neglect when discussing why dess might be the knight. The dialogue hidden in the game’s code.
This person (who we can assume is dess) is stuck inside the game’s code. She says that it’s completely dark, but that every so often, she hears a strange scratching noise. I think that scratching is us digging through the game’s code.
So, dess is trapped in a place which is pitch black (the game’s code). Unlike the knight, who isn’t trapped. I’ve seen some argue that dess is the knight and has lost her mind which is why it seems like she’s trapped somewhere, but I don’t think that’s true.
But if it’s not carol, and it’s not dess, then who is it?
I think the knight is asriel.
I think that carol and asriel are working together to find dess. Both their motivations match. Dess is carol’s daughter, so she’d want to find her, and dess and asriel were seemingly in a relationship, so he’d also want to find her.
So now that know dess and the knight (asriel)’s motivations, why is kris helping them?
At the end of chapter 4, Kris gets a phone call from someone saying that they promised.. something. I don’t think this is carol. Why would kris promise their neighbor’s mom to help her with a task this big and this dangerous, and this painful for kris?
I don’t think kris promised carol.
The promise they made was to asriel. Is it simply to help him find dess or something else? There’s no way to know. But it’s more plausible that they made a promise to their own brother than “Noelle’s mom”.
As with any theory, there are some holes in it. The biggest being that asriel is out of town. He could have come early, though. And also, the knight looks nothing like asriel. There’s also no way to prove or disprove this right now.

I got wilds to run fine on release, but it looked like there was sand in my eyes or something. After the first title update, the game barely ran at all. And I can't get it to run at all after title update 2
