You start from scratch at the start every time. You get better at getting stronger and better at being strong

You also unlock items you use that become available as shop items

So a really strong and rare item suddenly becomes a purchasable at every 3rd vending machine or so

Which becomes a non issue - because you can bank currency as I said, meaning items can be purchased only for runs you’re confident in

I beat hardest area in game on my first time reaching it because I had 3 1ups total and a very good build.

But I also made a habit of purchasing useful items.

The demo is free, no perks or 1ups are available, but it’s very fun and very descriptive of the loop

Some advice:
13 items is your max before you start to become encumbered

Pitons are probably the least valuable

They’re useful but every item is, and they arguably slow you down

That is unless you don’t hammer them in that often - because you can get a jump off of one without any hammer hits
