Actually, a case can be made that TC could have conceivably released the game in late 2023. However, Leth advised against it because he doesn't like indie games releasing in the second half of the year. As a result, they planned to delay the game to at least 2024. Seeing this, they decided "hey, why don't we add in all those things we wanted to add?" and development continued steadily until April 29th. All of this is entirely unfounded, but it would track with what we know about the Team.

I don't think that's necessarily a problem with its design because Hollow Knight's map is huge, almost to its own detriment in some cases.

I think any game eventually suffers this problem regardless of size because you know where you're going. You stop finding new places and you know all the more interesting, optimal, or important routes. You eventually start subconsciously avoiding areas on the map because you have no need to go there at a certain point.

That's just what I've always heard. Admittedly I haven't played a huge number of metroidvanias. I've played a few but I've always heard and been told HK is one of the largest in the genre, and it certainly felt that way to me. I had the Joseph Anderson experience before I'd ever even watched his video on the game, where I got on the tram in one area, expecting it to take me to Crossroads or somewhere familiar, yet it took me to a new place. I took it further and still another new place. Even if there are larger metroidvanias, it's my impression that HK is still quite large and is certainly not the smallest in the genre
