Emotional beats could be emphasized through close-up character shots and dynamic, changing animation styles.

It's art style first has to be grounded and simple, without have too much visual until needed. It's color pallet will also be controlled and not experimented. Basically, Hollow Knight would not be your average animated show

Lemme comment on this real quick. I think a series in this style would honestly work better set during the infection. Idk if you've seen in, but Scavengers' Reign follows a group of people stranded on an alien planet after their ship crashed, and they have to contend with trying to coexist and survive in a hostile and alien ecosystem. It's also an animated series that puts a lot of attention to detail on making it's planet/ecosystem feel real. Kind of a speculative evolution thing that gets explored while also focusing on characters' internal dilemmas and character drama

The fact is that even if some areas are more brightly colored and don’t seem as outwardly depressing, everywhere in the game is practically a zombie wasteland, the only two places still somewhat functional are the Mantis Tribe and the hive, and a huge portion of the mantis tribe was taken by the infection, and the hive’s queen is dead. So no where in the game is there somewhere where people aren’t surrounded by death.
