it comes from the Spanish word "A Third", and basically the pike square protects the gunners from cavalry advances

hence the term "pike and shot" for that era, this was however eventually outphased when guns started to become more advance, industrialization starting to creep in meaning guns can be manufactured enmasse (which mean it was more worth it to have that extra firepower instead of a guy holding long sticks) and finally with the invention of the bayonet, both the pike and shot part can be fullfilled by the same person

TLDR Hornet will get contact damage to a bunch of pikes and a bunch of long ranged enemies will fire at hornet with their smoke rock muskets which will cause a lot of people to complain theyre the next annoying thing next to primal aspids when all they need to do is throw sawwheel at kill the gunner leaving the pikebug behind

I think I just figured out what could be taking so long on Silksong:

DRM protection for launch. If the game is three or four times bigger than Hollow Knight was, TC might be trying to work on hiring a unique, powerful DRM software company to keep Silksong sales stable for the first 3 months after it gets released.

My theory: Denuvo is collaborating with Team Cherry to lock down the game and protect it from pirates in an aggressive way.
