Compositors are mostly just used for eye candy purposes, ie blur, shadows, opacity, animations, aswell as some utilities like vsync.
Assuming wayland:
From what i know, compositors arent really a thing anymore? Theyre generally baked into the window manager iirc, from what i know theres a difference in how x11 and wayland are build up structurally although im not super sure on the details
