Specifically for Raiden they literally butcher his character as a kinda ironic way to respond to people that wanted him to be more badass in mgs2
his character arc in 4 is about realizing that he still has humanity despite being turned into a “monster” and that after the ending he finally has the freedom to actually go live his life how he chooses
