I think the last series I completed was LOTR and at some point I made it a decent chunk into Game of Thrones, the first book.

Ik everyone's familiar with them now and everyone likes to dunk on George for not completing Winds of Winter, but he really is a good writer who knows how to write very human characters and convey their thoughts quite well. Bran for instance really thinks as you would expect a 10 year old boy to and acts as such. You get to see the world through each character's eyes on a very personal level and it's great. Jon Snow too is fantastically written.

When every character acts their age and level of maturity, and feels actually shaped by their experiences it really draws you into the story
