really maybe the franchise with the worst naming conventions (or lack thereof) to exist. like you have kingdom hearts 1, 2, and 3, which is all fine and good except there's a large handful of games between those that are absolutely essential to understanding the story but that have no clear order without looking up a guide, with such great names as: Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover, Kingdom Hearts 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage, and two different mobile games that are no longer possible to play but have archived cutscenes which are the only important parts of them
people insist kingdom hearts has a super confusing story but that's not really true, what's actually super confusing is just navigating whatever fucking game you're supposed to play next and figuring out where you can even play it in the first place

again, i couldn't agree less that the actual story content of kingdom hearts is all that confusing (granted if i tried to explain it now i'd be hard pressed to make it all make sense) but it's more a matter of the eternal confusion of people on the outside looking in of what the hell is up with the games themselves and the fact that when they were first releasing there was no way to know that the gameboy advance spinoff that came out between 1 and 2 was absolutely essential to understand what the hell is happening in 2 other than through word of mouth

also there are some specific plot points as of KH3 that are absolutely confusing even to someone who's played all the games, I'm not sure i can confidently explain the reason behind the existence of each member of the gaggle of different versions of Riku running around

i disagree so so hard with this. i won't pretend that it's always good or that everything in KH's large story is super cohesive and well-tied together at all times, because it's not, and is very very flawed. that being said, the story is nothing if not insanely creatively inspired-- i do think you're right that it seems like the story points of the different games come before their logical ties which tends to create most of the glaring issues the story has but i think it's a really impressively creative story nonetheless, and one that even as someone who's in their 20s as of this year still grabs me. sometimes it might just be the really good music tricking me into thinking something is a lot more profound than it is (i've been replaying kh1 recently and have been getting tricked by the music a lot). i just think there's a lot of genuinely fantastic moments of story writing in the franchise

Iām not about go full contrarian and argue your experience with the game and itās story isnāt valid, the series is popular for good reason. but being expressive and unique doesnāt make a story interesting - and in the case of KH it doesnāt feel fresh. Focusing on individual moments of climax or power shifts doesnāt work without structure, and KH seems to care very little about pacing.
In any case, you arenāt arguing itās for everyone - youāre arguing that it has merit to be found if you arenāt an outsider staring at a daunting ~11 game exposition dense storyline, which i agree with, and would be fair for any story. Regardless of quality.

oh 100%, i'll never blame anyone for being like "ehhh im not touching that" when looking at the still-growing catalogue of kingdom hearts games that are all important in one way or another while most people who are huge fans of the franchise (like me) will still not be able to give a guarantee that they'll even enjoy their time with it

Game of thrones is awesome. Dr who is awesome. Both are really messy, complicated, and long stories
I can think of a million reasons that someone would get sick of either of them
But those reasons largely feel subjective. Like an aversion to violence, horror, a formula, etc
Then KH comes along and takes itself either way too seriously or not seriously enough.

Itās both. Itās juxtaposed. Itās not mismatched or jagged, its contrast feels purposeful and endearing.
KH doesnāt pull that off often enough to not feel like a Frankenstein monster

oh absolutely, i don't think at any point i've been claiming that kingdom hearts' story isn't chalk full of flaws, it's just from where i stand it has a lot of qualities to it despite that, that on a subjective basis for me outshine the large large holes of it all, but they're absolutely holes that could be done without nonetheless

the party system in kh1 is odd because you can make some minor tweaks to their AI behavior in combat but other than that you have no control over them other than equipping them with new gear and giving them some items they can use during combat, all of which you're better off just using for yourself because goofy really likes to use all the potions you give him within seconds of any fight starting
