Hollow Knight was released on the Switch a few days after the Switch itself came out, which was a wrong move because it got overshadowed by Zelda, Mario Odyssey and more.

Nintendo, having few other triple A games to showcase, relied on Indies during E3 2018. This was when they contacted Team Cherry after they realised their success on PC. They offered them a 17 min showcase on Youtube during the post-Nintendo Direct showcase, and then they did the same thing again the next year (this time round, they let them showcase the demo for Silksong)

So, Nintendo and Team Cherry appear to be quite partnered up (and up to date, Hollow Knight is still in the top 20 best selling games on the Switch every month, I believe). I think them showing the game right when Nintendo's new console is announced would be an excellent marketing maneouver.
