The game goes for a "man telling his story of the past" type structure so it has a lot of charm in the way he tells the story as the level playes out and how changes happens depending on if he forgot something or wanted to exaggerate something which keeps the levels from getting boring which they might get if it was just shooting.

The narrator's unreliability worked for me too.
I loved how the game world would re-form around the adjusted recollection when the narrator got called out on his bullshit. I'd be alright with a few more games implementing that.
