There's two ways to go:
One is, full vanilla experience, it's honestly extremely dense already so I find it fun, and not having items descriptions is kinda part of the design as you want to learn and experiment with items you find.
The other is, well, modded, but be careful of what you install because it can make the game super easy sometimes so

I've played from a fresh file when Repentance came out and I'd say it's well made because at early stage, there ain't many of a difference with other versions, the "new" content comes later so as a beginner it's the same
Also Repentance QoL and balancing is just way too good like I can't play on lower versions anymore

Repentance adapts Antibirth mod into the game, but changes it so it fits with AB+ since Antibirth was uncompatible with it, and compatible with Rebirth only.
So Repentance is actually quite insane because the basic intent was to "merge" those 2 versions together
But Edmund just gone crazy over it and added a shit ton of stuff, sprites changes like doors etc, Elite have unique sprites and not ugly colors, new characters, new paths, new endings, well you got the idea.
Antibirth is like 20-25% of what Repentance actually is.

Jumping across ledges kept fucking up. It wouldn't let me jump or it would just drop me down. I'd be trying to attack and it keeps flinging me around so I have to just wait there before I can attack and then my stamina runs out and I have to do it all again. The final fight was my least favourite in the game because of how hard is it to remain steady
