Team fortress 2 has been “dead and unsupported by valve” for a decade. It became one of the top 3 most popular games on steam - last week.
It’s on life support, has little development prospect, and is still being played this many years since 2007 because it’s literally that good of a videogame.

It's like building a castle of cards, you have to be sure the lower layers are coherent enough if you start adding extra aspects/stuff. Mechanically wise but also in term of design, if there's experimentations there will very likely be design problems about the "lower layers" Idk if that makes sense
In the end it's gotta be at least fun or interesting to experience and if that's neither of them, well you have to work for longer to fix it or even rework other stuff to make it coherent
