I think part of it is adjusting to the style of game that 2D RoR is rather than it being innately hard. I would imagine a lot of people said similar things when RoR2 came out.

Once you understand how it generally works and get better bit by bit, it becomes so satisfying and amazing and even the process of getting there is fun imo.

And yea, Returns already does so much to elevate the 2D experience and the new gameplay changes/QoL features will be the icing on the cake and really make the experience complete imo.
