tbf the most emotionally complex character in hk is like "damn I was cool before, but now I'm not" and that's the whole thing. or, like, in hornet's case, "I'm cool and trying to protect the kingdom and I'm the child of two royals" and that's it. like all of the characters are incredible and I love them but they don't really have much complexity in the first place. that doesn't mean TC couldn't give some characters some depth (that would be just as cool,) I just don't really know if it's their writing style. they seem to prioritize the lore of the world and the events that take place in the story rather than the characters

You aren’t really supposed to relate to characters via their capabilities but instead their internal conflicts and relationship with said conflict and the environment

I think you can make almost anything a compelling main character, so long as you make sure that they fit within the world that you've made. For example, in LISA, the main character is a piece of shit who's just trying his best, and it doesn't come off as forced because you can become emotionally in-line with his goals as a result of being forced to make difficult decisions involving other characters and the world around you.
That's a videogame example but it applies to almost everything.
Even just the way that you write them can vastly change how the audience percieves the character's likability. For instance, Frodo could easily come off as a sniveling idiot if described just a little differently in the books, but Tolkien's writing ensures that the audience feels how Frodo is a genuinely good person who is being corrupted by the ring and takes the risk anyways (in an act of bravery), rather than a coward who whines about giving up halfway through and becomes an asshole to everyone around him because that's just who he is.
