kinda like hunger mechanics usually, you have them say in an open world with crafting because, that alligns with survival games right? then on practice its either a super fucking annoying system or an outright negligible mechanic noone cares about it

i like it when it does fit the loop it is about the gameplay itself, Dont Starve (its in the title) is all about survival through food, then for other games like Grim Dawn which is an ARPG centered with survival and shit, they managed to integrate how food works by adding the constitution system, where eating food refills your constition meter

Constitution is a secondary health regeneration system which activates outside of combat. Commonly referred to as Out-Of-Combat Regeneration, its purpose is to reduce a player's overall reliance on health potions and eliminate the need to drink potions after battles to refill health before engaging the next group of enemies.

Maybe in a majority most people said having it be optional is a good idea sure, but i think having someone give their opposite opinions of having the compass be free and still not impacting the exploration that much (if not at all) is also a good thing

its easier now because theres like thousands of people who played the game now, but on a smaller environment of like 2-10 playtesters, it may not be accounted or even noticed at all

But going back and thinking about it, its not like TC will always reciprocate playtester feedback, because at one point Leth was already telling them off if the thing theyre adding should be DLC, so perhaps at certain points they couldve been warned by their PTs that the game is getting a bit too bloated or big

but again DLC inclusion to base game is not entirely the same as adding random subsystems, so this is probably more or less just integrating it seamlessly to the main game
