I ||savescummed to get boss cell 2 after like 30 failed runs where i died at king's hand|| but i don't want to do that again because even if it's really frustrating doing that just takes away like half the gameplay loop.

Yeah you can just exit the game in one of the rest rooms and come back to the same spot in the run, so you can just copy that savefile to another slot and then copy it over the failed attempt file over and over.

Final Fantasy II: it has a level up system per weapon, where the only way to get stronger is to keep using the same weapons or fighting tactic to deal more damage
You get more hp by taking damage and staying damaged because healing resets the HP XP you would get.
And worst of all the spells don't have levels like cure, cura, curaga, there's just "cure" and you need to level that on its own
