What I would do in their situation is either I would announce that it will release on the deadline exactly 1 month before (so in less than a week) or I would just drop it on the deadline without telling anybody. Personally as an amateur going on for 5 or 6 months now i find characters more enjoyable and sometimes easier to do
It's fun to try out a new design or test myself with good proportions rather than try landscapes which can be difficult depending on the amount of detail i want in them
