The problem you're describing is usually fixed by unplugging your controller from your pc and then loading the game and plugging it back in on the main menu

If f1 isn't working right now.

The other thing you may need to do, is wipe out your Global settings files, which will clear out any bindings that you manually set, but might fix some weird issues.

Scarab should get the Unix API for you.

If it got the Windows one by mistake though, then that might be the issue.
The unix one can be manually installed from the github:
https://github.com/hk-modding/api/releases

Open it up to the folder with the AssemblyCSharp, then copy all of those files into the Managed folder of your HK installation, which will also have an AssemblyCSharp file

You asked for the path-- that's how you get the path if you don't know it.

That folder is where you need to tell the installer to go to, although it should default to there.

Unfortunately, I don't know what to do past that. You might have to locally build the ModdingAPI.
I'm pretty sure that's what @brazen pasture had to do to get it to work on Mac correctly, but idk why that would be the case.

If you don't want to build it, then you can probably use a key-remapping program to remap the controller inputs to keyboard ones, as that should still work correctly.

Ehhh, it's a very common issues with any of the Unix OSs. For Dandy, the Mapi on GitHub didn't work, but it instantly worked once they rebuilt it. I'm 99% sure it's an issue with the available release 🥴

here is a quick follow up, I did not realize this ... so I'm on linux but use proton to run the game ... downloading the api for windows and placing the files in the /steamapps/common/Hollow Knight/hollow_knight_Data/Managed/ folder fixed it!

Yes, but those files can have extra features in them. Sometimes there'll be alternate versions, for example. Grimm Knight comes with two versions of Descending Dark.

I'm confused regarding GODump, I've unzipped the whole github download into the Mods folder. I don't see a dll in there at all, like the guide says. I have Modinstaller and I believe the Modding API to be updated because usually it auto-updates whatever mods I have enabled. on starting the game, it never generates GODumpGlobalSettings.json into AppData.

You can try deleting the global settings file for the mod. To my knowledge, it does normally just put multiple bars in though, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't be getting them.

You're likely using the wrong installer

If you're wanting to use Randomiser 3, you'll need to downpatch. If you don't want to use Rando, you want to use scarab. Both of these are in the pinned messages.

It looks like it is trying to load something for your save from Redwing which is failing because it is not installed (I don't know much about Redwing so I am unsure why unfortunately), and Bonfire is also failing to load
