I'm on Mac, os Big Sur, I'm able to open vanilla HK via Steam (it's currently closed I just wanted to make sure it worked). I'm trying to install modinstaller 2 and randomizer 3. I'm looking at the instructions for installing mods in the pins (the step-by-step guide by Benji from 12/11/2018) and I'm a bit confused for steps 3 and 4, since on Mac there is no hollow_knight_Data file, there's just a hollow_knight that's an application that just opens the game if I try to do anything with it. This means there's also no hollow_knight_Data\Managed\Mods folder or an obvious place to make such a folder. At the moment in Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow Knight the three things there are the hollow_knight application, the Randomizer mod folder, and the ModInstaller folder. What should I do from here?

for step 4 of the guide, is a .dll file a Windows only thing? It says that the mod I want should be in the hollow_knight_Data\Managed\Mods as a .dll and not as a folder, but there's a bunch of different files & folders in the Randomizer 3 package I unzipped
also, does ModInstaller need to be in that Mods folder or can it hang out somewhere else?

Mod installer does not need to be in your mods folder. It also shouldn't download a zip, it should download the mod straight into the appropriate folder

Download the mods from the mod installer
You have downloaded the source code for the mod, not the actual release, though.
The release will be on the right hand side of the screen you downloaded the source code
when I try to open modinstaller 2 (which I got from a pinned post from this channel last night) I get the message "You can't open the application "ModInstaller" because it may be damaged or incomplete."
trying to install the latest modinstaller doesn't find the game files,
when I intall modinstaller, it asks me if [correct game file location] is the game file, then says it couldn't find it

on a scale of "sure, try it" to "no you idiot" how bad an idea is it to go into hollow_knight_data, make my own Mods folder in the Managed folder, put the Randomizer 3 .dll into it myself, and see if that gets it to work without ModInstaller, since my Mac insists ModInstaller is "damaged or incomplete?"

It won't normally, but make a backup of your files before opening a savefile with a mod installed, espacially Randomizer 3

do you know of any way to find ModAPI without ModInstaller? Modinstaller 2 is refusing to open so it's not really an option, I've deleted it and reinstalled it already and no difference was made
If you have any issue and i can't resolve it, try asking again later, other people might have the answer to your problem

in that screenshot I am looking at the ModInstaller folder I got when I unzipped the zip, which I placed in Desktop, I am looking at that folder which is on my Desktop via the Finder window

when I click "browse local files," the mod installer doesnt open. why?
how can I find modapi? I've been looking in the google drive but I don't see it in any of the folders
and when I try to unzip the file, it just recreates a folder
found the API for Randomizer 2 (tho I'd like to use Randomizer 3, I couldn't find that one in the google drive and I just wanted to find out what the heck a modAPI was), and when I checked on it it just contained the folder hollow_knight_Data, then the subfolder Managed, then the subfolder Mods, and then inside that was the Randomizer 2 .dll file.
I already have the Randomizer 3 .dll file inside a Mods folder inside a Managed folder inside the folder hollow_knight_Data, so should I actually need a separate modAPI file to get it to work?
and ModInstaller 2 is just flat-out not working, I've tried deleting it & reinstalling it, I've tried restarting my computer several times, I've kept it on Desktop, but no matter what I do trying to open that application only ever gives me the "this application may be damaged or incomplete" pop-up and its icon is a grayed-out circle with a bar through it

Hello! I hope this is the right place. Does anyone have any experience making custom skins? I am using the Hollow Knight spritepacker and whenever I pack my sprites into the atlas, I see a white edge on them. However in the individual sprite pngs, they don't have the slight white outline. my little custom sprite is the purple octopus. It may not be noticeable, but in game it definitely shows

I did delete some files since they were redundant and unnecessary to the game so I guess thats the issue
sometime ago the mod installer wasn't working so I had to manually add on the mods, since it works now, I deleted the folder and zip files that had those mods

Hey I got the Enemy Randomizer mod and it there isn't an option to randomize every enemy but keep them the same when you leave and re enter a room? Is there a mod that does that or is this the only mod?

Make sure you connect it either way after you get to the main menu, it can bug if connected before

I have an issue.
When I open Modinstaller, Grimmchild upgrades and Hollow point needed to update, so I did that, but now they aren't showing up as installed, and every time I click on the install button, nothing happens

Fwiw, there are definitely multiple mods that have the issue. Job change still has it afaik. And I think possibly part of the issue with the current installers was causing a mod or two to act up.

Mmm, for some reason I thought there was a pin about Hollow Point. I appear to be misremembering though 
||tldr:
- the only way to heal in Hollow Point is by damaging enemies without taking damage. Or by sitting on a bench.
- you can't start a new file with it. You must create a file, then quit, then go back||

There isn't much to see, it just says that it's outdated when I open Modinstaller, and after i update it, it doesn't show up as installed, nor does it install when I click the install button. It's the same problem that hollow point had, so I'll try cancelling the update. Here's a screenshot of what the Modinstaller screen looks like, no change when I click on Install:

this is what happened earlier today when I was trying to get it to work. I was told to have ModInstaller 2 and the associated file (from the same zip folder) on Desktop
delete all the modinsatller files
this is the popup I get every time I've tried opening ModInstaller 2, whether it was in downloads folder, on my desktop, or even in the mods folder; I've tried rebooting my computer and I've un-installed and re-installed it twice
just to make sure we're on the same page, is that the one for Mac?

To make sure I don't end up deleting the wrong thing (it's late where I am and I need to idiot-proof myself before I get totally sleep deprived), in which folder can I find ~/.config/HKInstallerSettings.json ? like, what should I substitute for the ~ to locate the path in the first place?

im trying to install the mod installer app onto my hollow knight but cant seem to find the files. For reference its installed from the xbox app if that helps.

huh well this is really weird but i figured it out. turns out I had QoL enabled. When I disabled it it worked just fine, tried enabling it again and the same issue happened
delete QoL.globalsettings and then try

alright closing and reopening the game made the other one come back. Deleted them both again and still coulfn

so I was able to get access to my hollow knight file because I bypassed the windows protection thing, but ModInstaller still cant find it

the problem isn't accesing, the modinstaller will need to replace a file which idt its possible without dual boot linux
I figured it out. Without the Vasi Mod having QoL enabled will just not let you play the game (Except for when randomizer 3 is on for some reason it just says QoL is disabled)

The problem is that the drive is sorted as author(s) - mod_name, instead of the other-way-around.
It makes it really hard to see the name of a lot of mods on it. I recommend looking at the drive in "list view"

Use ModInstaller to Install ModCommon (and if you're on Mac, ModdingAPI), then close ModInstaller.

Navigate to your mods folder:
Windows: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hollow Knight\hollow_knight_Data\Managed\Mods
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow Knight/hollow_knight.app/content/resources/data/managed/mods
Notes:
- These are the default Steam locations. If you are using the GOG version, or changed your Hollow Knight install location, then this will be different.
- If you did the previous steps correctly, this folder should currently have ModCommon.dll in it.
- Put the HKMP.dll file that you downloaded in step 1 into this mods folder

When you next launch HollowKnight, at the top-left corner of the main menu, you should see a list of the mods you have installed (ModdingAPI, HKMP, and ModCommon; as well as any others you may have installed). i don't know a mod to skip bosses but you can just cheat with invincibility thanks to debug mod if you want to

ModInstaller isn't working on my laptop. Even if I have it open on my Desktop, even after deleting & re-installing, even after restarting my laptop, every time I try to open ModInstaller I get a pop-up that says "this application may be damaged or incomplete," so I'm just finding the mods myself. I have a hollow_knight_Data\Managed\Mods folder and I'm putting the .dll files there myself, I just need to get Mod common and Serecore and then I'll have what I need for Randomizer 3 (I already have QoL, Modding API universal, Vasi, and Benchwarp)

when I unzipped the Modding API package from the link you gave me, it had a folder called Hollow Knight Data, inside which was a folder called Managed, which contained Assembly-CSharp.dll, next to a Mods folder

- a mods folder appeared, search for it
- place your mods in that folder

so for now I can just move that mods folder onto my desktop, try running the game with just the Modding API .dll, see if it creates a mods file, and then if it has, I can copy the contents from the desktop folder into the one created by Modding API?
Nah, you can create them. Otherwise going back-and-forth from vanilla wouldn't work.
The path does need to be correct though
Moddingapi isn't a .dll it definiteny is a .dll. I always think it's has a csharp extension specifically, because of the name.

The Assembly file needs to go:
Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Hollow Knight/hollow_knight.app/(you'll then need to right-click and selectshow package contents, and navigate toresources -> data)
Assembly-CSharp.dll is what it needs to be called be sure to have the right name
I tried running Hollow Knight, with all of the Randomizer 3 dependencies' .dll files (Serecore, Vasi, Mod common, Benchwarp, QoL) in the Mods folder and Assembly_CSharp.dll in the Managed folder, and the game menu was vanilla
