They are all about locks and keys everywhere. In hollow knight, areas you cant reach are locks, and movement abillitys are keys.

In metroidvanias such as Hollow Knight, you collect upgrades as you play, allowing you to reach new areas. If you don't think you can reach somewhere, you probably can't. Come back later when you have an upgrade that allows you to reach it.
