When he does that you can try pogoing if you're feeling brave, or spam ||desolate dive if you have enough soul||. I find it helpful to not move around so much and only react when he attacks as his movement is kind of erratic; most of the time you just take damage because he happens to jump on you while you're jumping, or something like that.

||for this boss essentially, you can just hold it after every strike. so nmg might walk backwards and summon demons at you, you can just dash through the demons and do a dash strike, with maybe another hit. if he descends diagonally towards in the air, then lunges to you, you dash away at first, jump over the lunge, then quickly dash towards him again to have a dash strike. if he summons spikes in the ground, great slash or dash slash him, depending on the distance you have, then quickly position yourself away from the spikes. if he summons fire beams in the ground, SLOWLY walk towards him and jump with a great slash, then slowly walk away|| of course, there are many other methods on defeating this boss, but this is my way
