There's no fixed direction. The game is meant to be non linear. If you are a completionist and feel a part of you die when you have to pick one way to go out of four, I get you. But it's worth it when you go back to places you've been and find secrets. The game rewards you for backtracking and finding new areas/rooms with abilities you get down the line.
