You’ll get it eventually, you are not supposed to beat the boss first try

You should try to be careful, ie, look at what the boss is doing, if they are reading up an attack, it is not worth it to trade hits, back up and let it attack

And yes you will die a few time, the bench is two rooms away, it doesn’t matter too much

||damage wise simply being in the air or not doesn't change anything however you do more damage if you hit the enemy while descending so from above. Thus for damage it's best to jump above the enemy and then casting ddark. If you are using it to dodge an attack however or for some reason can't safely get above the boss just using it on the ground is a bit slower than doing a small jump right before casting it. That's usually not really that important though except if you are doing really difficult stuff||
