He either jumps towards you. In which case, you can dash under him, turn around, and smack him. You can basically keep standing next to him and keep smacking him, since his next attack would require a jump, basically giving you a warning.

His other attack is if he jumps away from you to the edge of the arena. Where he does a shockwave attack. Simply stay away and dodge.

During his tantrum, you're able to hit rocks, which will bounce into him, dealing free damage||

I would argue that the best part of hollow knight is the exploration
For me what was most incredible in my first playthrough was being lost, not knowing where to go, struggling to progress and then finally, find a bench, a new ability, a shortcut
Using maps or following room by room someone telling you where to go looses that aspect entirely
I know it is less pleasant to not be constantly guided, to not use an already made map to know where to go, but I can guarantee you that you feel more rewarded if you don’t use any of that

So using ||nail arts and spells is a must, so you put on shaman stone and nail master glory, as for the remaining notches it depends, grubsong is amazing in colo, dreamwielder while it may seem niche can let you get back up to full soul by farming the last enemy of any given wave, mark of pride can be good, as is every other soul gathering charm (soul eater catcher twister)
Do not use quick slash, if you can strength will let you one shot enemies without nail arts so like, it’s good||

||Sharp shadow|| isn’t… good, so, why is ||sharp shadow|| not good
The main thing, is that ||dashing through enemies for damage, just is not necessary
sure sometime you do dash through enemies, and so you think "wow, it is so useful" but in reality, you could also just, not have dashed through them, but hit them with the nail instead and do the same damage (or more if you are using strength) without having to use two notches (or 4 if you have dashmaster)

Now you are gonna say, but if I need to dodge, I may as well dash through them and then sharp shadow is worth it
But even then, not really, you never have to dash through enemies to dodge them, you can always almost jump above them, back out, and the time you spend not dashing can be used to hit the enemy for again, more damage if you strength

And before you try to say that strength is worth 3 notches which is expensive and stuff, no strength is absolutely beyond broken, you will use it at all times and you are never gonna be doing the majority of your damage through sharp shadow dashes and not nail hits||

And this isn’t even talking about the ||dash length increase, which is both very annoying for certain platforming section, confusing in some boss fights as your dash has two different possible length, but sometime useful to dash through large bosses||

||Sharp shadow sucks
Sharp shadow is, in terms of combat, a crutch and a detriment. It has its uses in platforming, however in combat it often serves as a disadvantage, builds bad habits, and is frankly unneeded.

But it’s free damage
No it isn’t. strength does 32 damage sshadow does 21. You can’t attack and dash at the same time, so whenever you opt to dash through a boss you lose an opportunity that could’ve been spent hitting the boss and are put further from the boss, making retaliation more difficult. Furthermore, a dash takes 0.3 seconds to complete. Almost exactly the same time as it takes for a nail swing with quick slash. Due to how powerful and widely used quick slash and unbreakable strength are, I would consider it fair to consider those as the nail dps. This means that sharp shadow, when used perfectly, loses out on 11 damage every 1.5 seconds, or 7 damage per second. Another option would be using dashmaster to boost its damage to match unbreakable strength, meaning you can either pay 2 notches for 7 less dps, or 4 notches to equalize it. To put into perspective how much 7 dps is, you could kill nightmare king Grimm in 3.5 minutes if you did that much constant damage. Except you’re not doing that much damage, you’re losing it. So no, sharp shadow isn’t “free damage”, in fact, the less often you use it, the more damage you will do

But I can dash through big bosses and avoid hits
Which is, of course, a crutch. Every boss that can be dashed through with sharp shadow can be dashed through without. It’s purely a matter of playing more skillfully and timing your dash to avoid being hit. Of course, there are very particular scenarios in which sharp shadow does give an advantage. For example, dashing through god tamer beasts roll, as you can’t punish the attack regardless, though all those circumstances are highly situational and often still not enough damage to be worth using.||
