I built a little supercomputer

with raspberry pis

and I couldn't hook it up because I didn't have a crossover cable

I could either connect the controller computer to the main internet or the controller computer to the intranet of pis

but not both at the same time

And like any smart person instead of buying a patch cable I hooked the controller up to wifi with a usb wifi dongle

and shared that over ethernet

crossovers let you attach a router to an unmanaged switch

and have that router route other devices on the switch

which is very important if ur uni only gives you one ip address per ethernet port
