I always wonder if the pale king didn’t run to his palace out of cowardice or negligence, but more of that there was nothing he could do. His city was crumbling before him, its not like he could somehow save each and every citizen. So maybe he carried out his pure vessel plan and went to his palace in hopes that his plan would work, not wanting to watch his city fall? Or maybe some other reason? Theres so much up for interpretation in hollow knight

Its so far up for interpretation, it could be super deep lore or something dumb and funny! Who knows! Thats what I love about it.

for my au i chose a very out there interpretation that connects with the idea of him hibernating, basically his mind broke down and to keep it together he subconsciously hibernated to "reset" it. he was woken up before it could happen, but even if he would walk away alive it would still have pretty tragic consequences. like, without his traumatic memories and guilt, he would be able to function, sure, but he wouldn't remember anyone. hornet, wl, his people, he would be lost and confused. so it still wasn't the best plan, but then again he wasn't in a state where he could make that decision, it just sort of happened

yeah in the long run it turned out to be the best choice for him

there were a lot of coincidences but. he was woken up by ghost before he could lose his memories, he lost his powers and so his over-dependency on soul (that caused him to stop eating and become very malnourished and sickly from the lack of nutrition), which made him eat actual food and gain healthy weight, and then he reunited with hornet, holly and grimm and was able to live a happier life. so in some ways he has to thank the radiance cause he couldn't have lived that kind of life if it wasn't for his hibernation, which was caused by the infection returning
