For my humanized hollow knight I wanted him to have more outfit detail so I considered his beetle base along with the utility of what he'd need based on his movements in game. I gave him mainly tight and agility focused clothing with occasional padding to protect from harm.

Im not saying that you should feel this way, but honestly, from my point of view, I don't think saying "looks kinda like someone I know" is really harmful or anything. If anything, it helps give a sort of humanity to the character to find a connection like that.
