I mean, there are a few reasons, I can think of two:

• If you want to get a fraction into a decimal form, for some non-obvious fractions long division is really the way to do it (assuming no calculator, ofc)

• You have a polynomial, and one of its factors, and you want to get other factor (in general, helpful in factoring polynomials)

There are probably more reasons, but admittedly it doesnt get much mileage as you go further into math so I am less familiar with it (Which doesnt imply anything about how nice it actually is to know or how relevant it is, ultimately a lot of parts of math that are very relevant in other fields become fairly useless in advanced math)
