you could be right, but to me it seems as though the game is trying to communicate that whilst possible, it should not be strived for, I think the fact that we are demonstrably shown the key instance of thk displaying individuality, and it being called an "idea instilled" is evidence enough that it was hollow before that. Hollowness is possible but it just maintains a pointless stasis at best, I think the whole the knight discovering itself/hornet stuff is meant to mirror the "idea instilled" in thk, but using it to put the kingdom to rest, rather than just continuing the cycle.

I just had a neat thought: the reason the low % speedrun for hollow knight is so long is because they have to farm a bunch of dream essence, and they do this by getting a bunch of the bee spawner husks and farming the bees, but another potential method could be to go to the areas in waterways with those little decoratory maggots and kill them then reset the room, because they can drop dream essence. It would take like, 2 seconds every time to kill around 10 of them, which (might?) be faster than the current used method.

Mainly fire off fireballs when he runs away from you. Pogo over, turn around, fireball. Pretty good damage.

If you want an easy time, just hide in the corner. He can't hit you there when running from the platform, and you can get easy hits from him. Just dodge him running back by pogoing over. When he gets on the ceiling, just walk little by little to dodge the drops.
