Boss fights are endurance tests where the only reward is relief that it ended. The fanbase makes it worse. It is a cultish community that treats criticism as heresy. When I criticized the gameplay on Discord, many admitted they had not even finished or played the game, yet they still claimed to like it. Most responses were elitist variants of git gud or accusations of ragebait. These fans do not care about the game itself. They care about signaling membership in an exclusive club. They love being associated with a difficult game even if they have not beaten it. Defending the game is how they prove their identity, making enjoyment more about performing allegiance than playing.

Critics are just as bad. It is unbelievable that outlets gave this anything above a 4 out of 10. The experience is tedious and shallow, yet reviews treat it like a masterpiece. Critics seem to rate the reputation and aesthetic rather than the actual product. It earns praise because it is popular and difficult in name only.

Hollow Knight is overrated and tedious. The combat is shallow, the world is punishing, and the story is meaningless. Where do I even start, endless backtracking? The game encourages you to explore areas you haven’t already been via unmarked spots on the map or places you missed originally, the only real backtracking is getting your shade which you don’t even need to do if you just talk to jiji. Combat is repetitive? That can be applied to every game, Minecraft, Fortnite, etc. a combat system is part of a games identity, if you call the games very combat system repetitive the I doubt you play many games in the format of hk or any other games for that matter. The charm system was made for the player to customize, just because everyone else makes a meta charm build does not mean you have to use it as well, it’s just the best thing in the meta. The fan base which I admit is sometimes a bit toxic, but you can’t make a controversial statement and act like you won’t get flamed for it, that’s just dumb. Critics suck at all video games and still say it’s good so if you think it’s bad then you genuinely have an unbelievable skill issue. The game is fun if you try and make it fun but if you don’t then it’ll always be unfun. Also world building and lore establishment is a major part of a games identity. Need I say more?

Not really. I disagree that all games' combat systems are repetitive. Each encounter should not be just determined by which enemy you fight, but also by the number of environmental factors the game gives you. My issue with backtracking is that giving the player an opaque map and saying "figure it out" is, in my opinion, a poor design choice which I imagine the purpose of which to inflate playtime. The charm system is not all that complex, as there are only 4 or 5 charms you'd probably ever use in the entire game.
