Fun fact, wyrm is actually older.
Old english wyrm was used to describe basically everything without legs that is serpent like, so everything from the original concept of dragons, to snakes, to maggots is included in that.
Once english further developed under french influences, the y simply got shifted to the o, and now in the 21st century fantasy writing has made the original wyrm a more common word again
