I've done most of the pantheons, gotten all grubs, grabbed all soul vessel upgrades, have every mask shard but the delicate flower one

I think my biggest problem with white palace is it feels so disconnected from the spirit of the rest of the game

For most of hollow knight you're allowed to do whatever you want and explore these new areas, and with every upgrade you get more and more able to explore

Once you reach white palace the game comes to a screeching halt so you can do platforming that hasn't really been asked of you until now

And like, I'm happy HK doesn't do the Metroid thing where late game items completely break exploration and any sense of difficultly

White palace is an optional area and not needed if you just want an ending though

I mean it's needed for the actual final boss and ending

It's a mandatory part of the progression in that sense, and the game clearly wants you to go down there more than anything
