or perhaps they had just weakened from existing for so long

I think the difference is shown in hunters journal. One is a echo of your past life. Others are fragments of a lingering will. Those things are kinda similar but i think the difference kinda comes in as one is a past remanent while the other is all that survived of a being that is now dead.
