Not really Imo. I use I think a 32in cable for socks and it's pretty chill. You just have a loop at one side of your knitting and the other side has the ends of your needles. The one with the yarn tail coming from it is your working needle and the other one has the stitches needing to be worked.

So the pattern goes of pulling the needle with your next to be worked stitches up to the point and then pulling the working needle out to be able to pick at the stitches

Double Pointed needles are super valid and I made many gloves and socks and sleeves with those. I only learned Magic Loop pretty recently but I promise it's not scary.
