I believe that it's worth it. I don't play like a hyper aggressive speedrunner. But I use spells to supplement damage while I mostly dodge and poke like once or twice whenever I get an opening.

So a 1-2 pokes -Shade Soul is generally plenty enough power and the rest is just patience

To not get nailed, you must shoot the shade soul after the nail locks in your previous position, move and cast. The best play is still just to wait for shield spin tho then it's free

I suggest mostly using Dash Slash until you build up a spell to fire and camp one platform. Only move to dodge spears and when he starts the shield spin which is a good dash slash opportunity. Just remember that he always throws the spears in your direction relative to where they spawn. So don't move around across different platforms like you have ants in your pants and it's a lot more chill Imo.
