This archer is unable to progress onto the bridge I built. I ordered the warrior to the left to shatter the surrounding ice. I built a bridge to cross the water. The bridge built itself sideways (which is perhaps another bug, it should have a bias to build across land). Then I could not advance the archer across.

Hah, another one bites the bait
This is how bridges work, can't enter from the side genius 🤓. But to be completely honest I wouldn't have realized this either.
wait WHAT
i guess that makes sense but thats is certainly NOT how they worked before
ikr, I think they added this in 106
ok. well, this bridge shouldn't have been build sideways (ice to ice?) when a land connection exists
That's a very good point. Ice counts as land for bridge-building, but I guess the devs didn't consider the possibility of a water tile being surrounded on four sides by land, as it won't usually happen.
this can happen normally too
i think once i've tried to get a warrior onto the bridge to make an attack, realized I couldn't get in from the side, made a road to get in (I was confused and just tested)
What is "this" and what is "normally?"
"this" is being unable to enter a bridge from the side.
Normally as in without ice. This situation occurs anytime there is a tile to the side of the bridge point, you often make a bridge there as it gives one extra tile of range or if you want a unit to use it as a stepping pad for an attack.
Okay. Yes, this is true, but not what I was referring to. The OP pointed out that while there was a land-to-land option for the bridge, it connected ice-to-ice instead, and I'm trying to explain that.
Same thing. Why cant we choose which position we build it then??
What a rare but legitimate issue.
I personally want bridges to be made into "boardwalks" that can connect to any other bridge tile like roads, allowing multiple tile bridges (on shallow water), letting you make a boardwalk on the shoreline.
This includes diagonal bridges/boardwalks
at present the only way to make the really cool multi-tile bridges is with Polaris
Yeah, but that's not the point. If you want to build into the water, build ports.
@prime ridge The rationale behind this behavior (from top of the thread) makes sense, but the issues towards the bottom counteract it in my mind. Thought I'd put it out there.
Bridges always worked like this. It's just quite uncommon to notice it since you can move on to it diagonally and from each side (only 2/8 tiles that denies entry). Units with 2 movement would look like they can move on to the bridge too, but they take 2 movement to do so.
I understand that this is a feature and not a bug. The problem that got pointed out as a result is that, if there is land on all four sides, the bridge might be built sideways to how you want it, which means it doesn't really allow for enhanced movement.
@blazing hemlock check this out
I have no idea what to say to these. Midjiate might be able to help.
Yeah, we're aware of that issue. In that specific case we chose to keep it simple.
