This is not what lanterns originally did at all. I'm not particularly sure it's that worthwhile to reuse the lantern name for something like this
This doesn't fit Polaris's gameplay at all

The wiki is wrong then. That's not what the lantern did at all

Hell, the wiki says it was in the Polaris beta, but I'm pretty, pretty certain it never even made it to beta

The lantern only ever gave spt for nearby ice
