Here after my experience with challenger mode
Entered my 1st tournament Tuesday 3rd of January, 21 GMT, Small Lux.
1st match : I was away
2nd match : I was away
Semi final, best of 3 matchs : I was away in the 2 games (tournament stops for me here, I lost, there were no 3rd game)
In the final, again my semi final opponent played the 3 games as host.
On 1 side I played all my games away. On the other side the winner of the tournament played most if not all as Home, especially all semi and final matches that are best of 3 matches
Question 1 : How Challenger mode decide who is the host ? Is it only bad luck if I was away all the time ?
__Question 2 __: Why, even when it's best of 3 games, the same player is hosting the 3 games ?
Why is who host not a detail
I decided to give it a try again and entered the Small Ai-Mo, tournament today, 21 GMT.
1st match, guess what, I was away again ๐
My opponent met me at T2. Can level up his cap before me, can catch the vil my first unit was planning to take, can train units before me, can benefit of T5 Ai-mo monument before me ....
Globally it was gg at T2 but more generally it provides a consistent advantage to host, like always having one turn advantage.
That advantage is even reinforced by the fact tournament are (understandably) played on the smallest map sizes.
Each map brings his part of rng and natively the game is not totally balanced. No real problem with that.
But attributing the host advantage systematically to the same players on small maps completely twist the balance.
It was still exciting to join these 2 tournaments. I really hope Challenger mode can do something quickly to provide us a decent enough competitive environment.
