#Review: Daredevil: Doing Time by Mythologic

Still not the ratings I’d give it but I’m glad to see you enjoyed this arc a bit more than the previous ones!
I mean it'd probably have been an 8 if Chechetto had been on the whole time. Hawthornes art is not bad but i would just prefer Marco. And my instinct/memory was right, i do enjoy the Elektra parts more than Chips writing of Matt. Also for a tie-in the Knull issues were not bad at all I thought.
Wow, I’m happy to hear that! Yeah Chechetto cooks, understandable that a different artist took away from the experience
Having the same thing a little with Taylor Nightwing, it’s very apparent when Redondo is not doing the art
You could pretty much say that for a lot of this run/my scores, whenever Marco steps off it immediately is a worse book with worse art (no shade on Mobili or Hawthorne it just is what it is lol). I still have qualms w/ Zdarsky's writing but def enjoy the Elektra parts the most of anything so far. I think it also helps that many of Chip's OC's like Stromwyns, Cole North, and Izzy Libris have been on the back burner. It feels like a DD book again w/ Elektra actually protecting Hells Kitchen instead of whatever Matt was doing the last 25 issues (Catholic Guilt Tripping i guess)
Yeah that’s fair, I liked Cole but the Stromwyns are mostly just a Kingpin variation and imo a bit bland, same with Izzy
Also I haven’t yet written my reviews but I thought you’d be happy to know that I much more enjoy how Milla is written by Brubaker
yeah thats why i didnt want to talk to you too much about Milla yet either, Bendis left a lot that Brubaker picked up and ran with (like Prison and the rest of the Milla relationship). We'll see how you feel when you finish Brubaker's run
Yeah I’m taking a small break from DD but instantly I noticed that Brubaker fixed a lot of the issues I had with Bendis’ run
Brubaker is really great, i feel like his and Waid's runs have gotten slightly underrated in past years in overall discourse
Brubaker definitely, I think it’s also just a bit tricky bc even though I do really enjoy it, I wouldn’t be that quick to recommend it bc you do kinda need to have read the Bendis run, you can’t really read it on its own
Waid I feel is rated pretty accurately, everyone who talks about it seems to like it
It’s in my top 3 DD runs for sure
Its still loved but i mean moreso like people dont really talk about these 2 runs as much as they used to like 10 years ago.
which is fair, they were more recent back then
but i think they hold up very well
Hmmm yeah that sounds reasonable, I think indeed just time going over it is probably the cause
people like to discuss the hot new thing
I mean I feel like we’re hearing a lot less about Zdarsky DD too than a few years ago
And Ahmed wasn’t liked so we didn’t really hear much about that either XD
Like actually Phillips is the first time in a couple years I’ve seen a rise in DD talk outside of like you and me and the other regular people we talk with
i mean most DD comic discourse for the last few years was complaining about Ahmed's run, and us getting a few side things like more Elektra DD and Cold Day in Hell from Soule.
Oh yeah Cold Day in Hell was pretty big too
Soule is actually huge, his Omnibus was the #1 requested in this big YouTuber poll, and apparently they give these lists to Marvel and they reprint 90% of it. It even beat out Ennis Punisher MAX which is a consistently top requested Omni https://youtu.be/l4GnTyiS810?si=RI9KemxiT3GrLTcW

Actually a little surprising to me, I remember a couple years ago it was considered mid here
i didnt realize people loved his run THAT much. Like ive even seen some people be kinda divisive on it online
In DD terms at least
Marvel also reprinted it in small versions and DD:BA has taken A LOT from his run to, so maybe its more popular than it seems online.
i definitely dont think its mid, i rate it higher than Zdarskys run
Yeah that was my view too, heck even I’m a bit divisive on the run myself, and I’m only 1 person!
Yeah you know I don’t but valid enough :)
maybe you'll feel differently when you re-read 😉
Idk I think I liked the run on its own, but it just changed too much without explanation. Suddenly Blindspot is there, suddenly he’s back in NYC, suddenly he has his bar license back, suddenly he works for the DA, suddenly his identity is secret again, most of it unexplained (at least for a while)
So if you don’t consider Waid’s run it’s pretty good, but following that and making all these changes out of nowhere actually had me thinking I skipped an entire run
I genuinely triple checked
i liked all the new stuff he added like: Mayor Fisk, Muse, police coming after DD, Blindspot, etc. Felt like a lot of fresh stuff while also a return to status quo DD back in Hells Kitchen
Also his side books were not that good (DD/punisher, that Wolverine event tie-in)
Muse is goated shit and don’t get me wrong I like Blindspot quite a bit (hope we get to see more of him soon), my issue isn’t necessarily with the changes but moreso with how he went about implementing these changes
it sort of undid a lot of previous stuff which is jarring but it also established the basis for everything that came afterwards like Zdarskys run which you love
Which is the fourth arc of the run, for 3 full arcs you just kinda have to accept it. Even then, purple children didn’t explain all those points, and even the points it did explain imo it didn’t always do in a satisfying way
I think thats definitely the hang up ppl have w/ Soules run for sure
but for me i fw a lot of what he was doing. He did Mayor Fisk and the police parts waaaaay better than Zdarsky did IMO. also had better villains if we compare Muse to the Stromwyns
To me it very much read like Soule wanted to write his very specific version of DD that did not align at all with where Waid left the character, so Soule just didn’t give a shit and wrote his view of DD anyways. Purple Children to me felt like an afterthought that he was forced to write
(Not saying this is how it went, just saying that’s the vibe I got while reading his run)
Hence my stance of, I did really enjoy the run, I just don’t like how it went about continuity. If you take it on its own I think it’s a lot better than when you consider this to have happened right after Waid
Fair, he definitely did that very well
i mean thats just the nature of comics. Not everybody is Brubaker who is gonna immediately take on all the baggage of the previous run, they have their own stories they want to tell which i respect.
True, but I’ve never read such a drastic shift as this
maybe he could have transitioned more smoothly tho
Like he changed everything about DD’s life and mental status
Even the things he added himself, like just suddenly being a DA and just out of nowhere having a sidekick
I mean its not that big of a leap, Foggy was the DA back in DD #48 for example. It happens
i think we're supposed to just take it as a time skip
between Waid and Soule's runs
I guess but idk just didn’t really feel right to me, especially since he didn’t even reference the Waid run or hint at Matt even having gone through all these changes until Purple Children
