Thread for discussing Astonishing X-Men by Whedon & Cassaday, reviewed by Supersotilas!
So glad you loved it!! I’m in the 90s era after reading all of Claremont, and I’m def looking forward to astonishing a lot when I get there!
How long is this and would it be a good read for someone who’s basically not read any x-men before?
Not really into x-men but I mean I kinda have to check out this comic that is your “favorite comic of all time”!
It's only 25 issues long, which is on the shorter side compared to most X-Men runs. It consists of Astonishing X-Men (2004) #1-24 and Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men (2008) #1, AXM #25 begins a new story with completely different creative team so Whedon & Cassaday had to finish their story in the GS issue.
The story is very self-contained. It happens right after Grant Morrison's New X-Men and takes a few plotlines from it, but can also be read without reading Morrison's run first. It also helps if you're somewhat familiar with X-Men's history, like their relationships with each other. It is often recommended as one possible starting point for X-Men though, so as long as you're willing to go along with some stuff, you're good.
I can also go for more into specifics if you want, and if you decide to read this (which I naturally recommend) I can of course answer any questions you might have
