Daredevil (1964) #9 - "That He May See!"

Daredevil #9 is an odd, uneven read, one that flirts with pulpy fun but collapses under its own contrivances. On paper, the idea is inventive: a swashbuckling, wisecracking Matt Murdock whisked off to a fictional European nation to confront a would be dictator. In execution, though, the story leans hard on improbability. The hoops required to get Matt to Lichtenbad are painfully forced, hinging on an absurd “miracle cure” plot that treats his blindness as a personal tragedy everyone else must fix for him.

The villain, Klaus Kruger, is essentially a bargain bin Doctor Doom: medieval aesthetic, grandiose rhetoric, and a world-domination scheme so silly it’s hard to take seriously. Kidnapping an eye doctor and a barely established lawyer to conquer the globe strains credibility even by Silver Age standards. Meanwhile, the toxic Matt/Karen/Foggy love triangle continues to drag the book down, flattening Karen Page into a plot device and turning Foggy Nelson into an increasingly bitter presence.

What saves the issue from total failure is the presentation. Wally Wood’s art is a clear step up, injecting energy and visual flair, and the story moves briskly despite its flaws. Still, the relentless quipping, ableist undertones, and flimsy villain keep this from landing.

Final Verdict: 5.52/10
