to me his character is more important in the impact he had on a) his world and b) the story

Frr, Although he only used the dreamwalking spell, unlike Wanda who studied the whole Darkhold, the dude still got corrupted. I guess he knew that the Darkhold "exacts a heavy toll." Maybe that's why he stuck to just dreamwalking.

Because, If he had actually used other spells, he wouldn't have needed the book of vishanti. We all know that the book of vishanti is the antithesis of the Darkhold. If the book of vishanti could take down Thanos, then the Darkhold should be able to as well.
