i've scored 2 memorable ones recently where chaining unironically was a very good play

also, being able to get a vertical set up into a shot which can give you a flip + better horizontal positioning is quite helpful in rare contexts

i mean tl;dr they're rarely useful but i'm not gonna lie thru my teeth and say they've never been practical against good players

However I spend less time than I did when I had 20-50 hours, just going for ceiling mustys because practicing those mechanics I've become familiar with how my car interacts with the ball and how I can use that. gotta go through two bloodthirsty, angry grand champs to score. That's not too easy of a task

oh thats quite easy actually lol. gotta prime em up with a couple things, make them believe youre gonna do something, then just... dont do it. 60% of the time it works every time

for example: if i got a chance at a fast break after saving a shot and have boost, i will immediately begin a dribble. one opponent will always ALWAYS go for the bump, so i jump and stall once to avoid it. usually they turn around and try again, jump and stall. other guy rotated back by now and is shadowing you. jump once more, but actually flick this time and itll likely catch that shadower off guard, or at least put them in a really awk position. guy that tried demoing is now out of boost and cant get back, your tm is there for cleanup, new kickoff.

or what about this, similar thing but with no demos, both opponents in front of you waiting for your move. just drive down the pitch with the ball on your car. literally just a straight line to one of the posts. soon as you "feel" something (game sense) make a SHARP turn and youll break the ankles of whoever is first up to chal. do it again the other way and its gg. or just double jump pop... or jump, fake a flick and just drop the ball to the ground and watch them fly over you

i will say though - this feels like the EXTREME version of slowplay/faking.
They were panicking since it was in front of their net and since fakes aren't as utilized in these ranks, all that they're anticipating is a shot.

In pro play, I see so many times the players dropping the ball and then trying to barrel it in the net with a 50 because thats how well pros can cover the options

patience is a virtue and i always feel like im smurfing in casual when i do shit like this lol. granted these arent gcs but everybody is fallible to psychological priming and outplays. theres different spots where different ranks are fakeable. for higher ranks it seems i cant fake them unless i am in a genuinely threatening position that requires a prejump. high gc players have restraint and sometimes dont jump, ssls will dive you, not the ball, which again can be outplayed if you're good enough (im not, lol)

from what i see, the higher the rank, the more unfazed they get by shit. less jumpy, more willing to just stop next to the ball indefinitely if it means the opponent will just dodge out of the way in panic. the amount of stalemates ive seen in the past year from people finally realising that aerial plays arent the be-all-and-end-all has skyrocketed

it's not "simple" play but it certainly is a bit mindgamey

like, i have a feeling he's going to go, but I want to stay patient (defensive half)

ive been watching apparentlyjack's replay analysis videos recently and there are too many layers to positioning and playstyles that I don't believe one can become SSL without a journey of picking apart flaws in their gameplay/replays that they actively try to correct afterwards.

There are times where appjack explains why a play would be good in a certain situation, and a description of that play would be to: go on the ceiling and challenge...
that seems overly aggressive but the situation is so specific and you have to make that decision so quick

its so fucking difficult

if it weren't for our brains to subconsciously process things, we'd all be platinum at best.

it could be cope, but I truly believe that its experience overtime that gives you the ability to recognize certain situations and make the best decision to tackle it.

or if you study your own gameplay with a monacle and then focus on that aspect for a while to train your brain idk lol

while on some level i agree, looking at replays, analysing everything with a fine tooth comb, and actually being able to to implement and adapt your playstyle is what makes you SSL... but reading the play? i think thats a different skill entirely. i will instinctively go on the ceiling, put myself where i believe is the absolute best place to be is; close enough to catch a rogue clearing pinch against my teammate from the op, but close enough to follow up if things are favourable. gotta make that decision on the fly... but my execution is where it all falls apart and is why im a washed player. i dont bother looking at replays to improve, im too old, and im happy with my skill. anybody who is as good as us and has the drive to be better will eventually reach SSL assuming they dont burn out

im the absolute total opposite. ill stop moving cuz im sat EXACTLY where the ball will eventually end up. ive gotten saves sat on the goal line, barely moving (if at all), shot comes in (likely a double tap), im sat under it, it hits the crossbar and down onto me, bounces out, i get a free goal cuz i was already ready for it

shutting down is great, but it leaves their defence strong. letting them go makes them expend resources (space, boost, and time), and if you already have a counter lined up then its better to take a shot on weak defence than on strong. thats my philosophy anyway

What I do is predict the double tap.... I get the save 1/10 times

oh and if they miss the shot (typically happens), im out of the play for another 5 seconds

haven't been finding myself in that situation as much anymore since i have decent backboard coverage now, but if I did, i would've fixed it

i also feel pressure when i wear my yellow titles, which is practically all the time. i will genuinely just take it off and put "wild card" instead if im feeling im not living up to my own expectations

oh also airdribble bumps are counterable. people say its uncounterable, nah, you just need to position correctly to force a favourable 50. doesnt always work, but if your opponent is good at defence and doesnt panic, it can be saved (with great difficulty)

thats a good thing imho. people play different in casual yh, they dont demo chase as much, but you see much more variety in gameplay loops and rotation. ranked has such rigid rotations and the same patterns of play over and over and over. casual is a complete wild west and you need to be adaptable

which can work well in ranked, but then comes the issue of hesitation cuz youre unsure whether theyre gonna be agro or try to fake, and thats where i fall apart
